Why a Bible Verse Made Me Laugh

Have you ever read a particular verse in the Bible and laughed out loud?

Bible, verses, laughter, laughing children

I came across this entry in my journal dated 2010. The following is a devotional I lead while serving on the leadership team of an international women’s ministry.

One evening, while nursing Man Cub; I read this verse from Psalm 143:8 and laughed out loud!

Cause me to  hear your lovingkindness in the morning; for in thee do I trust: cause me to know

the way wherein I should walk; for I lift up my soul unto thee.

Why would this scripture produce laughter?

During that time in my life, my mornings sounded like this:

A crying baby,

A two-year-old using her command voice to belt out phrases like “NO!” and “STOP IT!”

And boys who morph into a herd of elephants as they race down the stairs and chase each other around the house!

Maybe you don’t have the joy of hearing sweet noisemakers (aka children) in the morning.

Perhaps what you hear is fear & dread about a decision that has to be made or has already been made.

Maybe you hear the shame from a past or present sin.

Or you hear something negative that was said about you.

Maybe you hear a disappointment.

Now read that verse again:

Cause me to  hear your lovingkindness in the morning; for in thee do I trust: cause me to know

the way wherein I should walk; for I lift up my soul unto thee.

Ask the Lord to help you to hear His lovingkindness (which is his kindness, mercy & favor).

That’s what I did, and it forever changed my response to what I hear in the morning. Whatever in life is “speaking” to us; we must endeavor and purpose to let the voice of God be the loudest sound we hear.

Question: What’s a Bible verse that has had a significant impact on you?

  1. Rejoice for the steps of a righteous man are ordered by God. That’s not the exact verse but what I remember of it. Tells me that when God orders our direction, He is in it with us. I’m so thankful.
